Background of the Study
Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of techniques used to manage network traffic and prioritize certain types of data to ensure optimal performance for critical applications. At Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, QoS is particularly important for supporting applications such as online learning platforms, video conferencing, research collaboration tools, and administrative communication systems (Oluwaseun & Sani, 2023).
In campus networks, QoS is crucial to ensure that high-priority traffic, such as educational content or video calls, is not disrupted by less critical traffic such as email or file downloads. QoS techniques can control bandwidth allocation, manage latency, and reduce packet loss, thus ensuring that users experience minimal disruption to high-demand services (Danjuma et al., 2023). This study aims to implement QoS strategies at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, to ensure the effective functioning of the university’s network, especially during peak usage times.
Through this implementation, the study will evaluate how QoS can optimize network resource allocation, improve user experience, and support the university’s increasing reliance on digital technologies.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, faces issues with network performance, particularly during periods of high traffic. This results in slow access to online learning platforms, delays in research collaboration tools, and interruptions in video conferencing. The absence of QoS implementation exacerbates these problems, as critical network traffic is not prioritized over less important data. This impacts the academic experience and administrative functions of the university.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To implement QoS techniques in the network infrastructure of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma.

  2. To assess the impact of QoS on network performance, particularly during periods of high traffic.

  3. To provide recommendations on further optimizing QoS for improved user experience and network resource management.

Research Questions

  1. How can QoS techniques be implemented to improve network performance at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma?

  2. What impact does the implementation of QoS have on the quality of critical applications such as video conferencing and online learning?

  3. What are the most effective QoS strategies for optimizing network performance during peak usage times at the university?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the implementation of QoS techniques within Federal University, Dutsin-Ma’s campus network. It will assess the effectiveness of QoS in improving network performance and ensuring priority for critical traffic. Limitations may include the complexity of network traffic management, the need for specialized hardware and software, and potential challenges in measuring the real-world impact of QoS strategies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Quality of Service (QoS): A set of techniques used to manage network resources, prioritize traffic, and ensure the quality of high-priority applications.

  • Bandwidth Allocation: The distribution of available network bandwidth among different types of data traffic.

  • Packet Loss: The failure of network data packets to reach their destination, leading to degraded performance.

  • Latency: The time it takes for data to travel from the source to the destination, which affects the responsiveness of applications.
